It's summertime. You know what that means--days at the beach, ice cream and...movies!
Movies from summer 2006:
The Matador (9/5/06): Mediocre. I almost fell asleep, but I didn't, so that's a good sign.
Material Girls (8/27/06): If you like the Duff sisters, you'll love this movie. If not, er...um...maybe you might want to spend your money on another flick.
Little Miss Sunshine (8/20/06): Kind of cute. Not the greatest movie ever. I didn't laugh much or cry. But it was alright.
Snakes on a Plane (8/17/06): This was sooooooo worth it!! Way better than I expected. Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. It wasn't the "campy," poor-quality movie I was hoping for, but it was much more entertaining. I was laughing throughout the entire movie. Once you get over how dumb the premise is, you're free to enjoy watching people get attacked by snakes in the grossest places, but then also watch some people really giving it to the snakes. Here's a piece of advice to any snakes who may be reading this: don't mess with Samuel L. Jackson. Especially not on a plane. Everyone else: see this movie!
Broadway Danny Rose (8/3/06): Eh. Not the best Woody Allen I've ever seen. Only semi-humorous.
John Tucker Must Die (8/1/06): As far as chick flicks go, this was one of the best I've seen in a while. It was perfectly cast, and I found myself rooting for all the good characters. I smiled throughout the entire movie. Good movie.
Blazing Saddles (7/29/06): I usually don't like to review movies I didn't finish, but I really don't plan on ever finishing this one. I would like to cross it off my list and be done with it. This was not funny, and it was kind of boring, too. Okay, fine, when the Indians were speaking Yiddish, it was a little smile-worthy, but that was the only moment like that. I had to stop in the middle.
Fiddler on the Roof (7/28/06): I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. The songs were enjoyable, and the movie had a good message.
Mallrats (7/22/06): Ah, Kevin Smith. I think I like you now. Your movies are pretty funny, and always entertaining. Nice job with this one.
The Insider (7/21/06): Interesting and thought-provoking. One of those movies where the characters undergo huge dilemmas and you're just glad you're watching them in the movie and not facing them yourself. A journalism movie, but also the other side of journalism as well.
Chasing Amy (7/19/06): I liked this one better than Clerks, and almost as much as Dogma. It was funny and entertaining. And I was SHOCKED to hear Silent Bob speak!
An Inconvenient Truth (7/16/06): Come on, Al Gore, why couldn't you have been more like this during the election--you know, funny, charismatic, knowledgeable? This movie was interesting and educational, and made me more aware of the issues our earth is facing. It was interesting how the style of the movie was very college-lecture-like, but it was very successful.
***Avenue Q****(actually a musical, not a movie) (7/15/06): AMAAAAAZING!!!! You should all go to New York and go see this show on Broadway. It's a mature spoof of Sesame Street, and it's absolutely hilarious. Don't see if you're overly sensitive, though--chances are, your race, religion, gender, economic status, or orientation will be poked fun at during the show. But it's just so great. GO SEE IT!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man's Chest (7/9/06): This was great. It was very long, but watching beautiful people like Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley makes the time go by quicker. The movie didn't seem to be rich in plot or character development, but I loved the fight scenes! So thrilling and exciting to watch. Also, the music in this movie (and the first Pirates) makes me so incredibly happy (I found myself wanting to sing along!). I can't wait to see the next one.
Brassed Off (7/7/06): I probably would have understood it better if I were more fluent in British. I didn't get a whole lot out of this movie. Music was nice, though.
The Devil Wears Prada (7/6/06): Yayyyyy for Northwestern journalism references! I cheered every time they mentioned Northwestern or The Daily Northwestern. It was also just a good movie with a good message. It had a little too much fashion for my liking, but that's the point, I guess.
A Prairie Home Companion (6/28/06): A little too Midwest for me. I know I'm picky with my movies, but this one didn't quite fit my taste. See, usually, I like movies that have plots, and this one did not. I also usually like movies where characters are developed and you don't leave the theater wondering if certain actors bribed the director to keep their characters in the movie even though they added nothing. Oh, and Lindsay Lohan played a young suicidal singer, so if you're into that, you'd also like this movie.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (6/27/06): This was really good! It had all the thrill and excitement of unraveling a murder mystery, but also an element of unusual humor. See this one.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (6/26/06): I'm not gonna lie--this was extremely disappointing. Quite possibly one of the least entertaining movies I've seen. Maybe I just don't get it. I saw it a long time ago and I didn't like it then, but I hoped that I'd be able to enjoy it now. Nope. I don't understand why everyone is so enamored with this movie. It's not funny.
Cool Runnings (6/25/06): It took me a while to get into this movie, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. For some reason, I kind of like these sports movies. They're all the same--at first, the teammates don't get along, and they all have family problems and self-esteem problems. But then, they have a really great coach who teaches them not only about the sport, but also how to be the best person they can be. The movie ends in some form of competition, and the team either a) wins, because they've worked so hard, or b) loses, but they're really the winners because they believe in themselves. (See also: Miracle, The Mighty Ducks, Bad News Bears, Coach Carter, Space Jam, Remember the Titans, etc.)
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex *But Were Afraid to Ask (6/24/06): Oh, Woody Allen. He's amazing. This movie was hilarious. Note: not appropriate for children under the age of...15?
High School Musical (6/21/06): I think my life is now complete because I have seen this movie. It was so much fun. It was heartwarming and fun, despite it being the most G-rated movie I've ever seen. The high school characters actually looked like high schoolers, not like the 30-year-olds that play high schoolers in some movies. The kids were talented, but not so talented that it was unrealistic for them to be high schoolers. I loved the movie's message. I couldn't stop smiling.
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (6/20/06): The first of the Bridget Jones movies was excellent, if I recall correctly. But if this movie's ratings were averaged out with the first movie's, the Bridget Jones average would be brought down a lot. This wasn't particularly funny. It was one of those "Watch out! Oh no! You're about to step into a potentially awkward situation!" movies, except those situations were just uncomfortable and not humorous.
Akeelah and the Bee (6/20/06): This movie made me so happy. It was entertaining and it had a moral. Everyone should see this movie. It almost made me want to learn how to spell.
Saved! (6/14/06): Wow. Best movie ever. Hilarious. A great satire. I enjoyed this one a lot.
